EXTENDED! until 31 August 2008 Perugia and Spello celebrate one of Italy’s greatest artists’ 550th birthday.
For the occasion the National Gallery in Perugia exhibits nearly all of the artists’ moveable works for the very first time, meantime, in Spello the “Cappella Bella” (Beautiful Chapel) reopens to the public after many years boasting a full cycle of Pinturicchio’s frescoes
…..Bernardino di Betto, called Pintoricchio or Pinturicchio (1454 – 1513) , son of Betto di Blagio, was born in Perugia. He trained under lesser known Perugian painters such as Bonfigli and Fiorenzo di Lorenzo. According to Vasari, Pinturrichio was a paid assistant of Perugino.
The works of the Perugian Renaissance school are very similar: paintings by Perugino, Pinturicchio, Lo Spagna and a young Raphael may often be mistaken one for the other.
